If you’ve found yourself thinking, “I should have started planning my proposal sooner,” you’re not alone.
One of the biggest misconceptions about proposals is that they take months to plan. While some do, I’ve also photographed beautiful proposals that came together in just a matter of days. Dustin and Caleb’s proposal is the perfect example. They were visiting Los Angeles for a vacation when one of their friends reached out after finding me on Google. The proposal was happening soon, and they wanted to know if it was even possible to pull everything together in time.
The answer? Absolutely!
Sometimes the most memorable proposals are also the simplest. We chose Point Dume State Beach in Malibu, one of my favorite places for a proposal along the Southern California coast. Rather than proposing on the main overlook, we planned the moment on the quieter eastern side of the bluff overlooking Dume Cove. This tucked-away spot feels much more secluded while still offering sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, making it perfect for an intimate proposal. I coordinated the exact meeting spot, discussed where I would be hidden, and made a plan for what would happen after the proposal. Everything was mapped out before they even arrived, allowing Caleb to focus on one thing: asking the question.
He had no idea I was quietly waiting nearby, camera ready to capture every second. After Dustin said yes, we didn’t end the evening there. We headed down to the beach for a relaxed engagement session during golden hour, walked along the shoreline barefoot, and even stopped at one of Los Angeles’ iconic lifeguard towers for portraits. Those photos became more than proposal images! They captured the excitement of the very first moments of their engagement.

What You Actually Need to Plan for a Surprise Proposal
If you’re planning a proposal on a shorter timeline, you don’t need dozens of moving pieces. You simply need a thoughtful plan.
The location should feel meaningful or offer a beautiful backdrop. For outdoor proposals, I almost always recommend planning around sunset. The golden light is soft and flattering, creating beautiful tones and a warm glow that simply can’t be recreated in the middle of the day. Since so many Los Angeles proposals happen along the coast, timing is especially important. As the sun begins to set over the Pacific, the beaches and ocean bluffs come alive with gorgeous light, making it the perfect backdrop for one of the biggest moments of your life.
One of the reasons I love Point Dume for proposals is the variety it offers. You can begin on the bluff with panoramic ocean views and then walk down to the beach afterward for engagement portraits. Since the eastern side of Dume Cove tends to be a little quieter than the main lookout, it offers more privacy while still giving you that iconic Malibu coastline. As someone who has photographed many proposals here, I can help you choose the exact spot depending on the season, crowds, and lighting.
You don’t have to know every detail before reaching out. That’s what I’m here for! After photographing proposals throughout Los Angeles for more than a decade, I know which locations work best, how to navigate crowds, and how to adapt if plans need to change. Whether you’ve been planning for months or just realized your vacation is next weekend, I’ll help make the process feel simple and stress-free.
Because at the end of the day, the proposal isn’t about elaborate decorations or a perfectly rehearsed speech. It’s about the two of you. And that’s exactly what deserves to be remembered.
