One of the greatest gifts of being a photographer is getting to document families through different chapters of their lives.
Years ago, I photographed Sabrina and Alex’s proposal overlooking the Palos Verdes bluffs. Later, I photographed the baby shower for their first daughter. And now, I had the privilege of documenting another exciting milestone as they prepare to welcome their second child.
For this maternity session, Sabrina had a clear vision. She loved the clean, timeless look of a studio session but wanted the comfort and convenience of being photographed at home. So instead of choosing one or the other, we blended both approaches.
Editorial Studio Maternity Session in LA
We started with a simple white backdrop set up inside their home. Sabrina wore a form-fitting black dress that beautifully highlighted her growing bump. Keeping the styling minimal allowed the focus to remain entirely on her. The clean backdrop, simple wardrobe, and lack of distracting props gave the images an editorial feel that felt both modern and timeless.
One of the things I love about photographing maternity sessions at home is the flexibility. We can create multiple looks and moods without ever leaving the space. After photographing Sabrina on her own, we brought Alex in for a series of portraits together. The simplicity of the setup allowed their connection to shine through!
For the second half of the session, Sabrina changed into a pair of jeans and a simple tank top. The look felt relaxed and effortless, providing a beautiful contrast to the more polished studio-inspired portraits. We moved throughout their home, using clean walls, natural light, and simple architectural details as backdrops. These images felt personal and reflective of this season of their life.
Family Session at Home
But my favorite part of the session came when their three-year-old daughter joined us. There is something so special about including older siblings in maternity photos!Watching her snuggle up to her mom’s growing belly, hold her parents’ hands, and proudly step into her new role as big sister added so much heart to the session. They capture not only the anticipation of welcoming a new baby, but also the love that already surrounds them.
Maternity sessions don’t have to happen in a studio or at a dramatic outdoor location. Sometimes the most meaningful place is simply home. By combining editorial-inspired portraits with personal family moments, we created a gallery that feels both elevated and deeply connected to this chapter of their story. And for me, it was especially meaningful to document yet another milestone for a family I’ve had the honor of photographing through so many important moments.
