Emmy’s Dance-Themed Bat Mitzvah at Casita Hollywood

Bar / Bat Mitzvah

There was no question what Emmy’s Bat Mitzvah should be about. She is a dancer, so her celebration became Studio E, a glamorous, dance-inspired party filled with personal details from the moment guests walked in until the last song on the dance floor.

I have known Emmy’s family for years and also had the honor of photographing her brother’s Bar Mitzvah, so getting to come back and document another milestone for their family was especially meaningful. One of my favorite parts of being a family event photographer is being invited back as children grow and families celebrate new chapters together.

Emmy’s day began with her service at Temple Judea before the celebration continued at Casita Hollywood. From the ceremony and family portraits to a completely packed dance floor later that night, there was so much to photograph.

A Dance-Themed Bat Mitzvah Designed Around Emmy

The best Bar and Bat Mitzvah themes are not chosen because they look beautiful. They should tell you something about the person being celebrated.

For Emmy, that meant dance. Her love of dance was woven throughout the entire party without making every detail feel too literal. Each table was named after a different style of dance, including acro and ballroom. Custom silhouettes and mirrored acrylic signage continued the theme throughout the room.

The design itself was glamorous and bold. Purple draping covered the ceiling, while black acrylic tables and gold metallic accents gave the room a sophisticated feel. Hot pink orchids, purple roses, and other vibrant florals stood out against the darker palette, with candlelight adding warmth throughout the space. Even the place settings became part of the design, with graphic black-and-white patterned plates that looked incredible against the glossy tables. It was fun, stylish, energetic, and ready for a party!

Interactive Details That Gave Guests Something to Do

One of the things I loved most about Studio E was how many details were designed to be experienced. There was a Candy Barre, a playful nod to ballet, along with a charm bar where guests could create their own bracelets. The pajama pant station was another favorite. Guests could choose plaid pajama pants and personalize them with iron-on patches, creating something they could actually take home and use.

These kinds of interactive details are always so much fun to photograph because they naturally create moments between guests. Instead of everything happening on the dance floor, there are people choosing charms, customizing their new pajamas, laughing with friends, and discovering something new around every corner of the venue.

As an event photographer, I am always looking beyond the major moments. Of course, I photograph the room before guests arrive and all of the details the planner and creative team worked so hard to create. But once the party begins, I am watching for the way people actually experience those details.

A Bat Mitzvah at Casita Hollywood

Casita Hollywood was such a fun setting for this celebration. The venue offers both indoor and outdoor spaces. But inside, the darker atmosphere gave the Studio E design room to really shine. Photographing a space like this also requires experience with event lighting. Purple and blue lighting can create an incredible atmosphere in person! But it takes experience to photograph it while keeping skin tones natural and preserving the colors of the room. I want the photographs to show what the party actually felt like!

That means capturing the glow of the candles and the sparkle of Emmy’s dress. It means photographing the movement on the dance floor and the quieter details throughout the room. It also means knowing when to use flash and how to use it without losing all of the atmosphere the event team created.

And this party was definitely made for dancing! After all of the planning that went into a dance-themed Bat Mitzvah, it only made sense that the dance floor stayed packed all night long. Emmy even performed a choreographed dance, which was such a fun and personal moment to photograph. Years from now, I want Emmy and her family to remember what the room looked like, but also how it felt to be right in the middle of that dance floor.

Photographing Family Milestones in Los Angeles

One of the best parts of my work is getting to photograph families more than once. Being invited back for Emmy’s celebration made this night even more special. When I already know a family, there is familiarity that allows me to document the day in a more personal way.

From her service at Temple Judea to the final songs at Casita Hollywood, Studio E was completely Emmy. A little glamorous, a lot of fun, and filled with details inspired by something she truly loves. If you are planning a Bar or Bat Mitzvah in Los Angeles, I would love to photograph the celebration, from the meaningful family moments and beautiful design details to every last dance.
