Over the last few years, I have had the honor of photographing dozens of engagement sessions all around Los Angeles! LA has everything from the coast to the desert to unique venues. As you start to plan your engagement session, you should start thinking about where to have it. As a seasoned wedding photographer in Los Angeles, I love helping my couples pick the best spot. So today, I am sharing three tips on how to pick the location for your Los Angeles engagement session!
Engagement Session at Orchid Fever
Before diving into some tips, I wanted to tell you a little about this engagement session! Sara and Chris had the sweetest afternoon session at Orchid Fever in downtown LA. These two love greenery and all things plants, so the spot was perfect. While this spot is known for its incredible Orchids, the greenhouse also features hundreds of other plants. My favorite part is that the large greenhouse has winding paths, and it really makes you feel like you are in a garden (and not just a store!). I am so excited about their wedding later this year at The Culver Hotel, which is one of my favorite spots.
Think Of a Place That Means A Lot To You
I want your session to be special to the two of you and really showcase your story. So as you start to brainstorm places, take notice of any meaningful spots that the two of you love! For example, Sara and Chris wanted their session to bring in their love of gardening. So we chose Orchid Fever, which was the most incredible backdrop. The gorgeous greenery really tied into their chic boho style!
Consider Your Style
A big part of your engagement session is your outfits! So as you are planning, consider the style you want the shoot to be. If you want to dress up in formal attire, you might want a chic hotel in Downtown LA or The Griffith Observatory like Sofia and Michael did.
If more laid back is your style, the beaches, and downtown Venice are great locations. For this shoot, Sara and Chris wanted to have an elevated everyday look, with Sara wearing a beautiful flowy dress, and Chris in a matching button-down with a floral pattern.
Pick A Less Crowded Time Of Day
Most of my engagement sessions take place in the evening, right around sunset, so we can get a beautiful golden hour glow. But if you want to avoid crowds, consider doing your session in the morning or weekday. Especially if you are planning on the beach or a local museum! These places can be busy during the weekend, so having your session on a weekday can help reduce the background activity.
