While I often share my weddings and engagement shoots, I also love to photograph families! Being able to get everyone together for pictures is such a special time. Especially as a family grows. I recommend to my clients to get pictures every year, especially if they have kids. This way they can go back and see how much the kids have grown! While family portraits are often done in the fall for holiday cards, I offer sessions year-round.
Last fall, I got to photograph the Bouchereau Family. Not only did I get to shoot the family, but they also bought their extended family! It was so great being able to have the grandparents and their aunt with them They chose Quail Hill, which is a beautiful park in Irvine. The leaves were still golden and red, and the sunset was gorgeous.
Often times, clients ask what they should wear to a family session – especially if it is going to be a larger group. So I wanted to share three tips for picking the best family session outfits!
Three Tips To Pick Your Family Session Outfits
Pick Coordinating Colors
While white shirts will always be classic and timeliness, you can also allow the personalities to shine with color and texture! The Bouchereau chose olive green, white, and brown as their palette, and it coordinated so well. Some wore olive shorts, other olive bottoms. It really let everyone have a unique style, but also coordinated. Plus, the colors were perfect for fall, with the orange and gold trees.
Keep Your Home Decor in Mind
Chances are, you are going to want to hang these images in the home. So make sure to keep your home decor in mind! If you’re going to hang your images in your living room that’s decorated in all light colors, you probably don’t want your clothing to be dark. If you prefer bright colors, add some accents to our outfit with a bright color. But pro tip: avoid crazy and loud patterns. Solids photograph best!
Add Accessories
Accessories not only help show off personality but can also add some nice touches. The Bouchereau family chose to keep accessories simple, with brown boots and gold jewelry. You can also keep the seasons in mind. If you are shooting holiday cards, you can add some scarves. Or if it’s summer, you can pick a fun necklace or earrings.
