The first time Julia and Sam crossed paths, they were students at UCLA, rushing between classes, coffee in hand, surrounded by the buzz of Westwood life. Years later, they flew in from Denver to celebrate their anniversary. But Sam had something a little more unforgettable in mind! He chose to propose in front of Royce Hall, the very heart of the UCLA campus and the place where so much of their story began.
A Proposal in Front of Royce Hall, UCLA
Royce Hall isn’t just a beautiful backdrop, it’s a UCLA landmark, built in 1929 and admired for its distinctive Lombard Romanesque architecture. It’s one of the university’s most recognizable buildings and a symbol of campus life, making it the perfect place to revisit for a milestone like this.
As a Los Angeles proposal photographer, I always guide my couples on timing, lighting, and location, but sometimes, excitement takes the lead. When Julia and Sam arrived at the pre-planned spot, Sam was so overwhelmed with joy that he dropped to one knee a little early – before he had the ring in hand! He quickly popped back up, grabbed the ring, and then knelt down again with the biggest smile, holding out a stunning emerald-cut diamond set in a classic gold band.
That perfectly imperfect moment? It made their proposal even more memorable and true to them.
UCLA Engagement Pictures
After the big “yes,” we walked through campus for a quick post-proposal photo session. We stopped by the Henry Samueli School of Engineering for portraits filled with laughter, emotion, and golden light. Their energy was radiant, and capturing it felt like preserving a moment suspended in time.
I’ve had the joy of photographing many UCLA proposals over the years, including this one, but each one brings something different. When couples choose locations with personal history, it adds so much depth and emotion to the story we tell through photographs.
